Another gem from Milestones
Another gem from Miles Davis's masterpiece album Milestones is "hidden" in Red Garland's solo on Straight, No Chaser, the famous blues.
As you can hear in the video above, at the end of his solo Red Garland literally quotes a historic Miles Davis solo on Now's the Time, another famous blues in F, using a classic technique called block chords. It harmonizes the melody with particular voicings while following its rhythm. The early Bill Evans made wide use of it too.
P.S. For the curious: the phrase that gives the tune Straight, No Chaser its title is a bar expression. If you go up to a bartender and say "straight, no chaser," you are telling them you want your whiskey neat, no ice, and without the beer that usually followed it.
